Despite its usefulness in other areas, the internet is being remarkably unhelpful about telling me how and where an American-born thirteen year old who's just moved to Quebec can get some help with her French, or if she's expected to pick it up from her surroundings. (She's at about the "plume de ma tante" level when her family moves to Montreal, which isn't really sufficient for book reports.)

On the bright side, I have learned some interesting things about Esperanto profanity! (Thank you, wikipedia.)

This is geared mostly toward adults, but it's a good place to ask where you can find stuff for kids.

I've got a book/CD French course from Living Languages ($25/US, $38/Canada) that would probably be helpful if she's self-propelled. (I'm not going at the language seriously right now, but it seemed sensible. My best vocabulary-builder has been -- no joke -- the bilingual labels in the grocery store. It's good to know one's haricourt from fromage.

Folks who know tell me Canadian French is not much like French in France... more like English in, say, Alabama vs. the BBC.

Good luck to the kid!

Oh? Esperanto profanity? Being able to say, "Go fuck yourself," to someone in Esperanto is almost as amusing as being able to quote from that classic film "Incubus", starring William Shatner.

Apparently Esperanto profanity comes in two major divisions - vulgarity ("Go fuck yourself" and such) and religiously themed curses ("Hell and damnation, it's hot!")

Pre-Captain Kirk Shatner in an Esperanto supernatural art film? That sounds interesting.
