I'm wondering whether I should actually write and post my ridiculous Harry Potter Mary Sue idea, just as a chance to practice writing something besides research papers that's more than a few paragraphs without any of the internal pressure that doing something for an idea I'm actually emotionally attached to would involve.
It might also be nice for the people at pottersues to get to pick apart something which has been proofread and isn't a "My Immortal" clone.
On the negative side:
*common sense
*I haven't read the books in ages, and never read the last two.
*It's hard enough sorting through the dross at ff.net without running into the adventures of Athenais Desiderata Leucippe ("Desi") Molyneux, her beautiful but aggravating part-Veela (and probably illegitimate Malfoy descendant) mother (Aspasia Melisande Molyneaux), and their neurotic-even-by-house-elf-standards substance abusing domestic, Tweaky (who has a tendency to retire to one of the cupboards with a bottle of vanilla extract when the world is too much with her - well, in canon they can get drunk on butterbeer, so why not?).
*It seems vaguely like a betrayal of some (probably nonexistent) social contract to create something where the failures of craftsmanship are due to lack of care, not limitations of talent.
